Portable drive, 5TB capacity. Hmm, there's something fishy here
Seagate plops BarraCuda inside external backup
Sitting in my desk drawer is a 500GB Hitachi Life Studio Mobile. External drive, pathetic capacity. Seagate has a 5TB Backup Plus Portable external drive in the same physical size, with ten times as much storage space.
The Backup Plus is 20mm thick and comes in 4TB or 5TB configurations having, we understand, a 15mm thick BarraCuda 2.5in drive inside it, spinning at 5,400rpm.
It supports USB 2.0 and 3.0, and has Seagate Dashboard software providing backup. The included NTFS driver for Mac makes it interchangeable between Windows and Apple notebooks. A Seagate Mobile Backup App means you can backup up iPhones and Android smart phones to the drive.
The product comes in red, grey (Seagate says it's silver), blue and black.
Seagate Backup Plus Portable
My local Apple Store only goes up to 4TB in the external drive category and its wireless Time Capsule maxes out at 4TB (Seagate LaCie portable or Promise Apollo desktop towerlet) too. If you need an extra terabyte then this new Seagate drive is for you.
The Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB drive will be available this month for an MSRP of $189.99 at consumer electronics resellers worldwide. ®
PS. That Hitachi Life Studio drive is in my waste bin now. Six years on it still works but the drive is far too small.
