DDN shines up EXAScaler Lustre box with new software

Intel software speeds HPC distributed file work

DataDirect Networks has upgraded its EXAScaler array to run the latest version of Intel’s Lustre software.

EXAScaler is DDN’s high-performance computing (HPC) array, with GRIDScaler being the companion hardware running IBM Spectrum Scale (GPFS, that was); Lustre being a distributed file system used in high-performance computing.

DDN announced its EXAScaler ES14K in June, with an upgrade to 14K hardware from the ES7K. (Here is info about DDN’s SFA14K technology.)

EXAScaler v3.0 uses Intel Enterprise Edition for Lustre 3.0, and features, DDN says, “the world’s highest sustained Lustre performance, in a converged appliance that is simple to install, scale and manage.”

Added DDN features are:

  • High availability enhancements to improve mean time to data access.
  • Metadata scaling.
  • Project quotas.
  • Support for the differentiated storage services framework.

DDN says it will open source some Lustre stuff later this year:

  • Lustre automatic test system to help developers run regression tests in parallel on hundreds of test nodes.
  • Lustre monitoring framework platform based on industry standards such as Collectd.
  • Elastic search capabilities for NoSQL databases and Hadoop.
  • Visualisation on Grafana.
  • Parallel copy tools and internal Lustre mechanisms to move/copy data between OSTs and across namespaces more effectively and in parallel.
