'Power equipment failure' borks EE's data services across England

PDP authentication failure? This is why

EE's 2G and 3G data services are struggling this afternoon after what seems like a power equipment failure caused problems at the telco's switch sites.

Customers in the UK have been complaining about "a major outage of 3G data," with one Reg reader saying that at 5am this morning access point name connection requests were failing, prompting a spat of PDP authentication failure messages.

EE has been suffering these pretty much annually, although this year's outage has struck in September rather than the regular date of April.

Voice and SMS services are still available, although data is being borked at the moment. A reader complained that areas affected included everywhere from "Sheffield to Northampton, across to Suffolk and back up to Sunderland. Reports from York, Leeds, Sheffield, Loughborough, Northampton, Grantham."

An EE spokesperson confirmed the problem to The Register, stating: "We’re investigating reports that a power equipment failure at one of our switch sites is affecting 2G and 3G data services for some customers in the Powys, Herefordshire and Shropshire areas."

"Voice and 4G data services are unaffected," they continued: "We’re working hard to bring our full services back online as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing in the meantime.”

The company asks customers having problems to have a gander at their network checker, though without data services we're not sure if that's going to be possible for everyone. Additionally, Twitter users are arguing that it doesn't seem to be working. C'est la vie. ®
