Google's multi-zonal cloud

Google has made a handy addition to its cloud: “Regional Managed Instance Groups” that spread virtual machines across its “zones”.

Google's cloud operates “regions” such as US West or Europe. Within those regions are “zones”, discrete facilities that should operate independently if another zone goes down.

Regional Managed Instance Groups mean you can configure a workload to run across multiple zones. Making that choice means you get VMs in each zone. So when lightning erases data in one Google bit barn, in theory the other zones you pay for will keep chugging along.

Azure and AWS have had similar features for ages, but Google's quite proud that it has caught up by putting Regional Managed Instance Groups into production today after a private beta. ®
