The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will see Japan train extra cyber-security personnel.

The country has been increasingly concerned at what it believes is an infosec skills shortage. Last year, Japan Today reported government estimates that it had a shortfall of nearly 100,000 staff.

High profile attacks such as that on the Japan Pension Service had already drawn a legislative response, with the parliament passing what it called a “basic cybersecurity law”.

Japan Today now says another chunk of the strategy has passed into legislation (ignore the badly-translated headline).

The main plank of the latest legislation is to create a national qualification for people who “support work to ensure security in information processing”, the report says.

The first exams are due to be held in April 2017, and the government is hoping to give tickets to more than 30,000 people by 2020. ®
