Virgin slams CMA

Virgin has slammed the UK's Competition Markets Authority for lobbying Europe to block the proposed merger between Three and O2, while previously waving through the acquisition of EE by BT.

Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media CEO, said: “A combined O2/Three would provide a counter balance to the strength of BT/EE, offering an alternative source of capacity to other providers who will drive competition in their own right.”

Virgin is also reported to have signed a £1bn deal with Three's owner CK Hutchison, to allow it access to the newly merged network if the deal gets the go-ahead. ®
