Payroll at XMA swells as industry veterans haul themselves aboard

Former Phoenix IT Group boss Bertram among those to rock up for services glory

XMA has added a couple of industry veterans to the payroll as a precursor to building out a tech services practice.

Six weeks after director Bordan Tchachuk exited the business, Peter Bertram, the one-time CEO at Phoenix IT Group, has arrived at XMA as chairman, our sources have confirmed.

Bertram – who is now listed as an XMA director on Companies House – previously ran and managed partner services provider Phoenix IT Group until it was sold to Daisy IT Group for more than £100m.

The business had been struggling in recent years until turnaround expert Steve Vaughan took charge, stemmed the losses and found a buyer.

Another new entrant to Nottingham-based XMA is Peter Heath, who joins as services director from XMA sister company Westcoast, where he was IT director for the past decade-plus.

“The prime focus [of the pair] is to drive the services business, get it up to scratch,” said one well-placed person familiar with the move.

XMA has acquired several firms in recent years including system builder/ reseller Viglen, the last remnants of Lord Shugs' IT empire. But ever falling product margins means it is more important than ever that local suppliers find other forms of revenues to bolster results.

The company refused to comment. ®
