Juniper slurps packet-optical outfit BTI Systems

SDN and NFV, apparently

Juniper Networks has announced it's going to acquire BTI Systems.

Once a packet-optical specialist, BTI Systems spent much of 2015 positioning itself into the software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualisation (NFV) markets. That work included giving its 8700 Series the ability to work with OpenDaylight SDN controllers.

Its Intelligent Cloud Connect product line is also a decent fit with Juniper's PTX Series, with both supporting label switched routing.

Jonathan Davidson, EVP for Juniper development and innovation, blogs that the acquisition will "accelerate the development of open and automated optical transport solutions that integrate with our NorthStar Controller."

NorthStar, launched in 2014, is an SDN WAN controller designed to provide automatic wide-area traffic engineering for IP/MPLS flows. BTI's technology would blur the line between the metro networks and the data center.

Juniper didn't put a price on BTI, meaning it didn't have to spend up big on the deal. Davidson's post merely notes that "the terms are not considered to be material to our financials," promising more detail in Q2 when the deal closes. ®
