Windows 10 won't come to old WinPhones until some time in early 2016

Christmas is ruined. Just ruined. For about one in fifty smartmobe owners

Microsoft has decided to delay delivery of Windows 10 for phones running Windows 8 or 8.1.

Redmond's previously said that WinPhone 10 will appear in December, but is now issuing a statement to the effect that “The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones."

Those on the Windows Insider program have no such problems – they'll continue to have the chance to install Windows 10 on their mobile devices. Those shelling out for a Lumia 950 or the 950XL are already running the new OS.

But the rest of those who wisely invested in a Windows Phone and can't wait to upgrade for a chance to run Universal Applications and Project Continuum are being forced to wait in a queue of indeterminate length.

The world is not exactly clamouring for Windows Phones: IDC recently opined that the operating system won't ever earn more than about two per cent market share. Microsoft surely has higher goals in mind, so will be miffed it can't start showing off its baby to the world. The company will also be mindful that a botched upgrade process won't advance its prospects, and that any reversal is the last thing it needs as it keeps tilting at the mobile device windmill. ®
