DDN spills beans on high-speed HPC hookup

Intel InfiniBand follow-on pops up in product for first time

DataDirect Networks has got itself an Omni-Connect architecture to hook up its storage to Omni-Path clusters, as well as having InfiniBand, Fibre Channel, and Ethernet connectivity.

Intel has devised its Omni-Path fabric as a successor to InfiniBand and True Scale. It operates at up to 100Gbit/sec in its first generation and supports 48 switch ports.

DDN says it has designed converged and hyper-converged storage products based on its Wolfcreek IME (Infinite Memory Engine) and SFA storage to integrate with Omni-Path fabrics.

It features "a high-availability, dual port design that delivers 2x more performance to compute, embedded application processors, and storage than alternatives." DDN claims this delivers "a 10x reduction in cost/performance versus any competitive alternative"; the cost/performance reduction being in terms of $/throughput.

DDN says the Omni-Connect products are suited for high node count Web, Cloud, and HPC data centers because scaling is simple and less expensive than before. It seems that higher-speed server-storage networking products are bubbling into life, with HPC getting the good news first. ®
