Show us your security chops with the Cyber 10K challenge

Students! Security amateurs! Beat the professionals and win £10,000

Competition NCC Group has devised a lovely cyber security competition, Cyber 10K, which sees the winning contestant receive £10,000 and expert advice from the company to develop their own security solution.Enter and find out more here.

We like the Cyber 10K concept so much that El Reg’s very own John Leyden, who has covered the IT security beat for 20 years, has joined the judge’s panel.

The aim of the competition is to engage young people and discover hidden talent in the field of cyber security, and is open to individuals and groups, students, IT security amateurs and small technology businesses.

NCC Group is a big cheese in cyber security, with thousands of enterprise clients on its roster. The company has devised the competition to maintain the momentum in the UK’s flourishing cyber-security sector.

Paul Vlissidis, director of trust at NCC Group, says: "By seeking out new talent and encouraging the younger generations to become immersed in the world of cyber security, we will continue to discover innovative ways of protecting our government, businesses and consumers from the rapidly evolving cyber threats."

Timing

Duration: September – November 2015

Entry criteria

  • Description of the problem you are trying to solve.
  • Description of your solution and how it addresses the problem.
  • In addition to the above for an entry to qualify you must include a working prototype – a functional solution which can be used to demonstrate the idea in a reliable manner that accurately shows the idea working.
  • It is recommended that you also include:
  • o A video of no more than five minutes, summarising the problem and solution, including a demo o Design documentation for the solution

Categories

  • There are no strict categories. Anything goes as long as it hits the entry criteria, but some areas that you might want to think about include:
  • o cloud security o cyber incident response and clean-up o IoT and mobile security o consumer and user awareness, training and support o cyber security on small budgets

Judging The judging panel includes the following experts:

  • John Leyden, security reporter, The Register
  • Professor Steve Schneider, director, Surrey Centre for Cyber Security
  • Professor Tim Watson, director at University of Warwick’s cyber security centre
  • Alex van Someran, managing partner at Amadeus Capital Partners
  • Paul Vlissidis, director of .trust at NCC Group

Awarding

A judging day will take place in December and the winning entry will be announced in January. ®
