Red Hat updates OpenStack suite

Come get a Kilo's worth of high-availability support and auto-deployment goodies

Red Hat has wrapped the April 30 “Kilo” release of OpenStack into its enterprise suite, which has just gone general-availability.

Two years into its OpenStack effort, the company says version 7 of its platform includes improvements to deployment and management, high-availability support, security control, network flexibility and backup.

For deployment and management, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 7 (Red Hat subscribes to the kind of engineer naming conventions that would call sushi “cold dead fish” and give it a version number) has added a platform director.

Based on the OpenStack TripleO project, the director includes system-wide deployment health checks and automatic “ready-state” bare metal deployment.

RH's Enterprise Linux monitoring and failover services provide high availability for traditional workloads, the company says, and security is improved with support for OpenStack's Neutron modular layer and vSwitch port security.

The company adds that this version incorporates newly-minted Neutron networking-as-a-service features, including better IPv6 support to “support direct network routing between tenants and the external gateway”.

Neutron routers also get high-availability features, and better monitoring and reporting.

Cisco's said the latest release has already landed on its Unified Computing System infrastructure under the two companies' year-old OpenStack partnership. ®
