General Electric: Come here, cloud, and get in my IoT belly

Industrial giant ‘continues to grow its investment in software’

US conglomerate General Electric has announced it wants to join the cloud party with the launch of its own fluffy white stuff.

GE said it wants to capitalise on the 50 billion machines estimated to be connected to the internet by 2020; the so-called "Internet of Things" economy.

The conglomerate describes itself as a "digital industrial company" focused on aviation, energy, healthcare and transportation.

The company's Predix Cloud platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering will capture and analyse machine data in an "industrial-strength cloud environment", it said.

Last year the biz said it made $4bn (£2.6bn) in software revenue, a figure set to climb to $6bn (£4bn) this year. "GE continues to grow its investment in software," it said.

Jeffrey Immelt, chief exec of GE, said: “Cloud computing has enabled incredible innovation across the consumer world. With Predix Cloud, GE is providing a new level of service and results across the industrial world."

“GE’s Predix Cloud will unlock an industrial app economy that delivers more value to machines, fleets and factories," said Harel Kodesh, veep and GM, Predix at GE Software, "and enable a thriving developer community to collaborate and rapidly deploy industrial applications in a highly protected environment.” ®
