PROFESSORS! PROFESSORS! PROFESSORS!
Ex-Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer funds new chairs at Harvard's CompSci department
Former Microsoft CEO will donate around US$60m to Harvard in order to endow a dozen new Professorial appointments in computer science.
Ballmer's told The Harvard Crimson his new PROFESSORS! PROFESSORS! PROFESSORS! mantra is inspired by a desire to keep helping Harvard, from which he graduated in 1977.
The twelve new appointments will apparently double the size of Harvard's computer science department, a feat Ballmer thinks is a fine idea because the university's efforts in the field trail the likes of MIT, Stanford, and Carnegie Mellon. He also feels that technology “can make a difference.”
And indeed it can. Whether it could make more of a difference at a university with fewer resources than Harvard is a matter Ballmer may contemplate as he gets deeper into his post-Microsoft career. ®
