The DRUGSTORES DON'T WORK, CVS makes IT WORSE ... for Apple Pay

Goog Wallet apparently also spurned in NFC lockdown

Apple Pay has reportedly been refused by not one but two leading US main-street pharmacies - apparently because their parent company is developing its own payment system.

According to MacRumors, the large Stateside pharmacy CVS killed its near field communications (NFC) terminals just days after it was claimed that drugstore Rite Aid had ended support for Apple Pay and Google Wallet mobile payments.

It was alleged on Saturday that CVS emailed its staff telling them that the NFC system had been switched off. Anecdotal reports on Twitter seemed to back up that claim.

As noted by MacRumors, the supposed rejection of Apple Pay may relate to Rite Aid and CVS's involvement with the Merchant Customer Exchange, which has its own CurrentC mobile payment system. SlashGear has more about this here.

CVS had been accepting payments from Apple's iPhone 6 models. But Apple Pay has had a few serious teething problems as we noted earlier this week.

The Register sought comment on this story from CVS on Saturday evening, UK time, but it had not responded to our questions at time of publication. ®
