In-flight slab-fondling and mobe-stroking in Australia at last

Qantas, Virgin jump through CASA's hoops

Australian gadget-owners rejoice, you can now keep your devices switched on from “gate to gate” on Qantas and Virgin Australia flights.

Earlier this year, aviation regulator CASA announced it was relaxing the rules that demanded a power-down for mobes and fondleslabs, but that airlines required certification to put the rules into practise.

The certification went beyond merely checking that aircraft were proof against electromagnetic interference. It also included cabin crew training and procedural stuff like making sure devices greater than 1 kg were stowed during take-off and landing in case of turbulence.

Users will still have to put their kit into airline mode throughout the flight.

Qantas subsidiaries Jetstar and QantasLink are now finalising their submissions to CASA for certification under the new rules. ®
