Nokia networks biz slurps Australia's Mesaplexx

Signal booster makes small cells punch above their weight

A seven-year-old Australian radio filter specialist has been bought by Nokia Siemens* Solutions and Networks to bolster its position in the small-cell and “hetnet” market.

The Brisbane-based Mesaplexx, founded in 2007, put six years into developing filters, with its xCube technology reaching the market in 2013.

The first release of xCube was an 1800 MHz duplexer with high isolation and low heat dispersion. At the time, the company said its products could offer base station coverage improvements of 30 per cent. That, Mesaplexx claimed, gave small-cell deployments the kind of antenna performance comparable to those of larger base stations.

Announcing the acquisition, Nokia says the filter technology is a good fit for its Flexi family of base stations, in particular reducing the footprint of its small cell base stations by “30 per cent of more”.

Nokia's mobile broadband EVP Marc Rouanne notes that there's still a lot of work to be done in filters for mobile network kit.

Commercialisation Australia, the Australian government industry assistance program slated for retirement and replacement in the 2014 budget, had backed Mesaplexx with a commercialisation grant of more than $AU900k.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed. ®
