Hybrid flash mutant Tegile: Array with Dell, we say... 100 times

Upstart claims it's replacing giant's boxes

Hybrid flash-disk array tin-meister Tegile claims its hardware has replaced more than a 100 Dell Compellent arrays at customer sites.

The Zebi array, given analyst firm DCIG’s top “Best in Class” accolade in its 2013 Hybrid Storage Array Buyer’s Guide, uses flash for performance data and disk for less performance sensitive data. Tegile makes a thing of beating competition, citing fellow hybrid array startup Nimble in September, and now going after Dell.

It mentions several Compellent array-replacing customers by name as: Credit Union of Colorado, Fanatics Inc, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Minnesota Wild, and Nutraceutical and Oil Insurance Limited. Minnesota is the state where the Compellent operation is based.

The company's marketing veep, Rob Commins, claims customers can get an entire Zebi array "for less than the cost of a Dell Compellent hardware refresh… because of our dedupe and compression, users get 75 per cent more capacity than they would have paid for".

Of course, it goes without saying that he’d like Dell Compellent channel partners to consider selling Tegile’s tin instead.

Dell has hybrid flash and disk-using Compellent arrays, with data tiered between two flash tiers, SLC and MLC, and the spinning media. It also has deduplication for files with the Compellent FS8600 NAS appliance product. ®
