Minty fresh Linux: Olivia hits the virtual shelves

More MintSource, vicar?

The Linux Mint project has released version 15 of the desktop that they’re calling the “most ambitious release since the start of the project.”

New features in Linux Mint - based on Ubuntu - include elements designed to make management and use easier and smoother.

The distro also features a driver manager for installing and managing proprietary drivers from Nvidia, ATI and Broadcom, using a new interface featuring lists and icons.

“MintDrivers relies on the same Ubuntu backend and works the same way as software-properties-gtk. It just looks a bit better,” says Mint's What’s New page.

A new tool called MintSources has been built to manage packages and source code from the main screen, and replaces software-properties-gtk.

Also updated is the Cinnamon desktop, now at version 1.8, with bug fixes and new features that include Cinnamon Settings; you no longer need go through the GNOME Control Centre.

Users can also add Android and iOS-style widgets to your desktop, called Desklets, select a screen saver and customise your log-in screen using HTML5.
