Tablet? Laptop? HP does the splits with Tegra-based SlateBook x2

Netbook with removable screen, anyone?

HP is to follow its Windows 8-based tablet keyboard combo, the Envy x2, with an Android Jelly Bean version - the computer giant’s take on Asus’ popular Transformer series.

Set to ship in August - in the US at least; the UK release is less certain - the SlateBook x2 will be built around a 10.1-inch, 1920 x 1200 IPS LCD screen powered by a 1.8GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 processor. There’s up to 64GB of on-board flash storage and 2GB of RAM. It’s got dual-band 802.11n for networking.

The clip-on keyboard unit packs in extra battery capacity, and adds USB and HDMI portage to the SD slot fitted to the tablet part.

The price? $480 (£316), says HP, which will probably subtly increase to at least £399 over here once VAT has been added. That may seem a bit much for a ten-inch netbook with a removable screen, but is on a par with the keyboard-less iPad with Retina display.

Oh, and if the x2's 10.1-inch display is too small, HP also announced the Split x2, a 13.3-inch version. Interested? Since the Split only packs a feeble 1366 x 768 resolution, will be priced at $800 (£527) and runs Windows 8, albeit on Ivy Bridge Intel Core i3 and i5 CPUs, we suspect not. ®
