Lovefilm Germany goes titsup for a FORTNIGHT

Amazon-owned Dummkopf locks out movie fans

Lovefilm Germany's backend has been down for 14 days, leaving subscribers unable to access their accounts to rent films or use the video streaming service.

Although lovefilm.de is alive, systems handling customer accounts are kaput. The Amazon-owned company admitted on 28 August that its servers had gone titsup in a corporate blog post, which stated that maintenance work on lovefilm.de had gone wrong and that engineers wanted to test an upgrade before rolling it out:

The necessary maintenance of LOVEFiLM is taking longer than expected, so the website and streaming devices remain offline at this time. … We want to check several times that all updates have been completed properly before [bringing] the site back online.

But two weeks later, it appears that upgrade hasn't quite worked out: punters' accounts are still frozen. A Reg reader told us today he has been unable to log in to his lovefilm.de account for the past three days, and that he'd also received a message today from Lovefilm - via the movie service's website - apologising for the lack of access to his records.

The company's PR blog assured customers that account details are safe and film preferences are not lost, but the message doesn't extend that reassurance. It simply states that accounts have been locked pending the resolution of the problem.

"Please visit our website again later," the message reads. "We apologise very much for any inconvenience caused."

Given the length of downtime so far, you'd think restoring the service would be something they'd want to finish schnell. A Lovefilm.de spokeswoman told Der Reg foreign desk: "Site maintenance in particular areas – the rental list and My Account pages – is just taking longer to complete than we expected." ®
