Office 365 hard enough to penetrate US government

FISMA fulfilment fuels feud with Google

Microsoft’s cloud productivity pack Office 365 has won an important certification from the US government, by ticking off all the to-do’s on the list to comply with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA).

FISMA requires US government agencies to develop and maintain security controls, the better to protect the nation’s economic and security interests.

Office 365 can therefore be deployed with impunity across the US government, as agencies can now be confident their security controls won’t be compromised by the cloudy apps.

Redmond is jolly happy about the decision, saying “With FISMA, it becomes even easier for governments to choose Office 365.”

Google, however, got into a public fight with Microsoft over FISMA in April 2011, when Redmond claimed Google was a FISMA-free-zone. Google shot back that it was FISMA-compliant and that Microsoft wasn’t anywhere near achieving FISMA’s good cloudkeeping seal of approval at the time.

This new announcement means the two are now on par, at least in terms of FISMA-fulfilment. May the best sales force win! ®
