NBN Co keeps Aus unemployment down

Corning opens new digs and is hiring

Corning Cable Systems has unveiled a new manufacturing plant in Victoria which will create 400 new jobs as a result of securing a key National Broadband Network Co contract.

Corning Cable Systems is the primary NBN Co supplier of optical fibre cable and will invest more than AUS$40 million in its operations in Clayton, boosting staff levels to between 300 and 400 jobs when the NBN rollout hits its peak.

The Federal Member for Hotham and Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean, said “the people of Hotham can be proud that the fibre made here will be shipped right across Australia, helping build the NBN and allowing regional and rural Australia to access the same broadband services at the same price as the rest of the country for the first time.”

The jobs at Corning Cable are part of the 16000 to 18000 direct Australian jobs NBN Co estimates will be generated by this project.

Recent new job opportunities have emerged as a result of the NBNCo’s Gold Coast customer service centre hub, which is creating around 130 new jobs which is due to one in the second half of the year and in Tasmania Leighton Contractors four year NBN Co construction tender is slated to create up to 800 new jobs at the peak of the rollout.
