NBNCo loses lynchpin exec

Telstra deal architect Tim Smeallie departs

NBN Co’s third foundation employee Tim Smeallie, the architect of the cornerstone Telstra network deal, is leaving the carrier.

Smeallie, the carrier's head of commercial strategy, will leave NBN Co in mid-May. The high profile departure comes as the national network moves from planning to execution and operation.

Last month the national infrastructure project unveiled details of its three year plan which will cover over 3.5 million homes. While in late February Telstra and NBN Co finalised their pivotal AUD$11 billon infrastructure deal.

Smeallie, a former highly regarded Citigroup telecommunications analyst joined NBN Co in 2009 while it was still operating out of ServCorp offices and has been instrumental in negotiating the foundation of pivotal commercial contracts with Telstra, Optus and several other ISPs.

He and his commercial strategy team of 55 have been responsible for putting together the commercial framework, pricing and revenue plans that will underpin the NBN going forward.

“The company is moving into its second phase. The broader strategy has been locked and loaded and will continue to be fleshed out in coming months. It is time to hand over to the guys putting the fibre on the ground,“ Smeallie said

His diverse role which included M&A activity, utility access, media and content strategy, network extensions and co-investment is anticipated to be carved up into two or possibly three new roles.

No candidates for the roles have publicly emerged yet and NBN CO is currently undergoing a search process.

Smeallie confirmed that he is moving back into corporate advisory but could not reveal his next move yet.
