Online-first blobbening to create vast eyeball mountain

Yahoo! and ABC have announced a news partnership that they hope will bag them 100 million US users a month.

ABC is looking to harness Yahoo!'s big audiences for its content on GoodMorningAmerica.com and three other new online-first video series, hosted by its own anchors. At the moment, Yahoo! News and ABC News get a combined audience of 100 million users on PCs, mobiles and tablets, according to a Yahoo! statement, and they're hoping to carry all these through on the new partnership.

The buzzword of the launch, announced on ABC show Good Morning America, was "game changer", with execs using the phrase, and even the famous Diane Sawyer calling the deal "game changing" on air.

Under the terms of the deal, ABC News will become the premier news provider on Yahoo! News, with editorial teams from both working on original content for both sites.

"Teams will co-produce coverage for major news events and will have integrated bureaus in New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles," the ABC release said. "ABC News content will be integrated throughout the Yahoo! News network, including the Yahoo! front page. ABC News will maintain editorial control over ABCNews.com and GoodMorningAmerica.com, and Yahoo! News will maintain editorial control of all its sites."

One of the online-first video series, Newsmakers, will kick off today with ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos's interview of President Barack Obama.

"This relationship will give ABC News an unrivalled ability to reach across the web, combining Yahoo!'s vast distribution and cutting-edge technology with our award-winning journalism," gushed ABC News president Ben Sherwood without a hint of irony.

Ross Levinson, executive VP of Americas at Yahoo! News, was similarly understated: "ABC News and Ben Sherwood's vision is completely symbiotic with ours; together we can create highly engaging experiences for more than 100 million users a month that will set the standard for the industry." ®
