Twitter cock-up confession deflates Weiner

Member of Congress

US congressman Anthony Weiner has admitted to tweeting his weiner.

On Monday, Weiner – a member of the House of Representatives from the 9th District spanning portions of the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens – admitted that his Twitter account had not been hacked and that he had indeed exchanged inappropriate emails and pictures over the Internet with at least a half dozen women over the past three years.

Weiner said that on the Friday before the Memorial Day holiday, he posted a lewd photo of himself on Twitter that he intended as a private message to a woman in Seattle. He then panicked and took it down and claimed that he had been hacked. According to the congressman, the woman was "unwittingly dragged into this" and "bears absolutely no responsibility" for Weiner sharing his bulging netherparts with the entire internet.

"I have made terrible mistakes, I have hurt the people I care about, and I am deeply sorry," Wiener said in a press conference this afternoon.

Before Weiner's press conference, BigGovernment.com posted an image of a bare-chested Weiner the congressman sent out sometime last month, and it shared details of online conversations he had through Facebook with Megan Broussard, a college student and single mom living in Seattle.

Weiner said that most of the racy chatting, phone calls, and photo sending took place before he married Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and a former White House intern, in July 2010. But he added that some of the exchanges took place after he was married. Perhaps it was a bad idea to have former President Bill Clinton presiding at the Weiner-Abedin wedding. Perhaps politicians are people, and they are just as stupid as the rest of us.

"To be clear, I have never met any of these women or had physical relationships at any time."

Weiner said that he is not resigning his office. Immediately after the press conference, House Minority Leader (and former Majority Leader) Nancy Pelosi called for the House to begin an ethics investigation.

Weiner is the second member of Congress from New York to prove in recent months that he is not a member of the Twitterati. Back in February, Republican Representative Chris Lee, from the 26th District in western New York spanning from Buffalo to Rochester, resigned his office after he responded to a personal ad on Craigslist, telling a woman he was a divorced lobbyist while sending shirtless photos of himself under his real name using his Gmail account. A special election was held on May 24th and Democrat Kathy Hochul has taken over the long-time Republican seat formerly held by Buffalo Bills football great Jack Kemp. ®
