North Korea blamed for bank hack

Hackers not so lonely

South Korean prosecutors have accused North Korea of a recent hack attack on a bank which caused a three-day systems outage and deleted details of some customers' credit cards.

The attack apparently came from the same IP address as that was used to launch a distributed denial of service against the south earlier this year.

That attack, blamed on the North, was aimed at 40 government websites but only brought down 29.

The software used to create the zombie machine was similar to that used in 2009 against various South Korean government sites.

Prosecutors told the BBC the attack was an "unprecedented cyber-terror deliberately planned". They said a sub-contractor's laptop had become infected with zombie software in September 2009. This machine was then used to remotely stage the attack.

The two countries are still officially at war, despite the North's inability to feed its population. ®
