Guardian shuts local blogs

Future's not so local after all

The Grauniad is shutting three local news blogs and likely laying off the three reporters concerned.

The blogs were aimed at Cardiff, Edinburgh and Leeds and had a reporter, or "beatblogger", for each.

The sites launched in early 2010 and were meant to develop: "new models for journalism and social engagement through a mix of reporting, collaborative engagement with local communities, organisations and groups and aggregation".

Digital content director Emily Bell said at the time that the blogs would be looking for new commercial models too – we're guessing that's the bit that didn't happen.

Today the paper said it had a learned "a lot" from the beatbloggers but that the local sites were "not sustainable" in their present form. ®
