Green Parrot to cure YouTube shakes

Google has announced that it has acquired a Dublin firm "specialising in motion based manipulation of film and video" – with an eye to improving the quality of YouTube videos.

Down at the YouTube blog, Google Video Technology big cheese Jeremy Doig says of the sometimes less than top-notch YouTube footage: "What if there was a technology that could improve the quality of such videos – sharpening the image, reducing visual noise and rendering a higher-quality, steadier video – all while your video is simply being uploaded to the site?"

Co-incidentally, there is. It was developed by Green Parrot Pictures, which was set up six years ago by Dr Anil Kokaram of Trinity College's school of engineering.

Since then, Kokaram and his team have apparently forged a reputation for themselves working on films such as Lord of the Rings, X-Men and Spider-Man.

A statement on the company's website says of the absorption into the search engine monolith's empire: "We're excited to join Google, where we will apply our expertise to improve the online video experience for hundreds of millions of users worldwide on many different products, platforms and services."
