Toyota plans major electric car roll outs

Sylvan dream machine

Toyota is banking on a big jump in the price of oil: it said today that it plans to launch rather a lot of new e-cars by 2015.

The strategy will see the Japanese car giant "expand [its] line of hybrid models, launching about ten more by 2015".

"About ten", eh? Nice to see Toyota likes to be precise.

In addition to the hybrids, the auto maker will "develop a full range of plug-in hybrid vehicles, pure electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles", it said.

The scheme is one part of Toyota Global Vision, the company's strategy to panel-beat its dented reputation and repair the damage inflicted by the the major recalls it has been forced to implement this year and in 2010.

Toyota tree

Arboreal passion

All of which seems to have gone to Toyota's corporate head. The company now envisages its business as a tree. Toyota said it has "employed a tree metaphor, focusing on roots, trunk and fruit" to help it express Global Vision.

All that's missing is the sound of whalesong...

Whatever, its commitment to the introduction of more e-cars over the next four year period will undoubtedly please others of an arboreal bent. ®
