Facebook flick up for 8 Oscars, King's Speech for 12

David Fincher's flick The Social Network has gobbled up eight Oscar nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards.

The movie, which loosely chronicles the early life of Facebook and its baby-faced founders, is in the best picture category alongside Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, True Grit and Winter's Bone.

Elsewhere on the list, Fincher scooped up a Best Director nomination, Aaron Sorkin got an Oscar nom for Best Screenplay Adaptation, and Jesse Eisenberg - who played Facebook boydroid Mark Zuckerberg in the film - received a Best Actor nomination.

The Social Network picked up four other Oscar nominations in the Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Mixing and Original Score categories.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame wrote and composed the music with collaborator Atticus Ross.

However, Fincher's film didn't reign supreme on the list today. That accolade instead went to British flick The King's Speech, which pulled in a total of 12 Oscar nominations.

Quality headfuck masterpiece Inception, which was directed by Christopher Nolan, also secured eight nominations for the Academy Awards. And Ethan and Joel Cohen's latest effort, True Grit, picked up 10 noms.

Earlier this month, The Social Network was honoured with four Golden Globes.
