AMD joins Intel mobile Linux push

Fusion play

AMD has joined chip-rival Intel's MeeGo initiative, which aims to build a Linux platform for mobile devices.

The company said on Monday that it's providing MeeGo with engineering expertise to help establish "the technical foundations for the next-generation mobile platforms and embedded devices."

Ben Bar-Haim, vice president for software development, said in a statement that MeeGo will help drive AMD's embedded plans and create "expanded market opportunities for the company's forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units."

Bar-Haim was referring to AMD's Fusion APUs, which finally started shipping last week. The chips put the CPU and graphics processor on one die.

Intel created MeeGo earlier this year with Nokia, when the two merged their separate Moblin and Maemo mobile Linux initiatives. The goals is for a Linux-based operating system to be used by netbooks, tablets, smart phones, and in-car systems.

AMD announced its MeeGo-initiative membership at the MeeGo Conference 2010 in Dublin, Ireland. ®
