Verizon to get iPhone 4-and-a-bit early 2011

New design iPhone 5 coming too, say moles

The long-rumoured Verizon-friendly version of the iPhone will go on sale early next year.

So say folk "familiar with the matter" cited by the Wall Street Journal and who peg the CDMA iPhone's release taking place within Q1 2011.

Anyone assuming this will be the iPhone 5 may be disappointed. According to the WSJ's sources, the CDMA iPhone will look like the GSM iPhone 4. All that's different, it seems, is the cellular radio on the inside.

But the iPhone 5 is coming, with, other moles claimed, a new form-factor. If Apple is true to form, the new handset will be launched in June 2011.

Given the antennagate controversy, that's an easy claim to make, but the success of the iPhone 4 in spite of the reception problems demonstrated by some of the early handsets may well persuade Apple to retain a design of which it is clearly very proud.

And Verizon punters are going to be extremely less likely to buy an iPhone in Q1 if they know for sure a snazzier model will be out in June. ®
