Street View snooping sparks new watchdog site

Privacy site wants your help

The row over Google's Street View network sniffing, along with European proposals to keep browsing history, has led Privacy International to set up a new website which aims to harness technical knowledge and skills to push forward debate on these issues.

The lobby group wants to focus debate on the technical questions which often underlie these issues, and are often overlooked by mainstream media.

For instance the row over Google's Street View cars has left many questions unanswered. These include: "Why was Google developing code to sniff such data?", "How was it possible to integrate such code into software which was not designed to deal with such data?", and "How come no-one noticed the massive pile of data which must have resulted from using the software?"

The site, which you can find at boxcrack.net (sorry about the Flash animation), also aims to be a whistleblower resource - the site includes information on how to contact the site safely. ®
