Microsoft TechNet blogs go into stasis for revamp

Redmond: One-week freeze to add web-2.0 cool factor

Microsoft has disabled comments on its TechNet blogs for the next week while it upgrades the system.

The company said it wouldn’t be writing any blog posts until 24 May while it upgrades MS TechNet blog servers.

Various blogs across the Redmond online estate have posts confirming the temporary shutdown of comments and messages.

“Here’s a quick FYI for all of you that over the next week, we are going to be moving the thousands of blogs that run on the blogs.msdn.com site over to a completely new web platform, which will give us lots of new ways to connect and communicate with you,” noted Microsoft’s Eric Ligman on the firm’s small biz channel blog.

When the upgrade completes TechNet blog servers will support features including invisible capture, improved viewing of posts and better integration with the likes of Facebook, Windows Live and Twitter, said Microsoft.

All the blogs will remain online during the upgrade, but no posts will be added and all new comments will be disabled until the migration is scheduled to complete about a week from now.

In the meantime, Microsoft said users could email the software giant or contact it via any number of Web2.0rhea channels.

Earlier this month the vendor confirmed it was killing off its newsgroups and encouraging users to move to forums instead.

Microsoft has over 2,000 public groups covering its various products, as well as 2,200 private groups for the likes of Microsoft resellers. But from June 2010 these will be moved to revamped forums on TechNet, MSDN and Microsoft Answers.

The company has posted more details about its bloggy overhaul here. ®
