Giant iPhones invade Florida

85 pounds of fanboi strap-on

A trio of Floridians have created a pair of Halloween costumes sure to melt the hearts of even the most jaded Apple fanbois: working, wearable, human-sized iPhones.

Unemployed former Apple employee John Savio, actor/DJ Reko Rivera, and carpenter John Matthews mounted a pair of 42-inch LCD TVs in sandwich-board frames and connected them to their iPhones. As they use the iPhones, which are mounted in brackets at the top of their costumes, the iPhone's displays are replicated on the flat-screen TVs.

Gizmodo notes that this isn't the first time that Savio has created giant, wearable iPhones. In 2007, he and friends built two 37-inch versions - but those merely played canned video loops on their displays. This year's models have been upgraded to interface directly with the pair's iPhones, which provide real-time app action.

The costumes are powered by auto batteries carried between the costume-wearers' legs - careful with acid spills, chums - and weigh 85 pounds (6 stone) apiece, making dancing the Halloween night away an exhausting proposition.

CNBC reports that the costumes cost a total of $2,000 to build, a sum that the group plans to recoup by winning costume contests. Don't laugh - they've already picked up $1,000 in prize money, and Halloween isn't until Saturday night. ®
