Mozilla Labs canvases developers for web tools directory

Space/time continuum - discuss

Mozilla Labs has launched a central tools index to help simplify the lives of web developers across the globe.

The open source browser maker’s experimental team announced the Open Web Tools Directory yesterday.

“We’ve come to the opinion that in addition to creating new tools, one of the best things we could do is help developers understand the broad universe of tools that already exist and expose some of the fantastic and amazing work that’s being done,” said Mozilla Labs’ Ben Glabraith in a blog post.

Developers interested in sniffing around the new directory will first need to have a modern browser with canvas installed.

Firefox 3.5, Safari 4, Chrome 2 or Opera 9 (but not a canvas-less Internet Explorer 8) are all sufficient for viewing the OWTD, noted Mozilla.

However, this being a Labs project, the directory is far from complete. That’s where the developer community comes into play.

Mozilla wants people in the web game to tell it about tools they use via a data entry form.

“Help us fill up the directory with the hundreds or thousands of items we’ve missed!” said Galbraith. “Your entries won’t go live immediately, but we’ll review them on a regular basis and get them added.” ®
