Mozilla marks June for Firefox 3.5 release candidate

Code freeze expected next week

Mozilla plans to spin out the release candidate version of Firefox 3.5 in the first week of June.

The browser maker’s director Mike Beltzner confirmed late yesterday that Mozilla was “setting an aggressive code freeze target of next Wednesday, May 20th for Firefox 3.5 RC”.

He added that the Firefox team was down to 52 code blockers and 12 non-code blockers, and said progress had been “great”.

Mozilla will freeze code next Wednesday and then begin producing the release candidate, or near-ready, version of Firefox 3.5 in the final week of May.

The release candidate should then land in the first week of June, if Mozilla isn’t hit by any show-stopping bugs between now and then.

Mozilla has consistently been set back with the development of its forthcoming browser. It was previously dubbed Firefox 3.1 and had been expected to arrive in December 2008.

But due to lengthy delays caused by various bugs including glitches in Mozilla's new JavaScript engine - TraceMonkey - the open source outfit was forced to push back its release date, as well as changing the browser's name to reflect the huge amount of changes it's undergone in beta. ®
