Council to crack down on Cracknuts Lane

4 Corfe Close also for the off

Lewes District Council has attracted the attention of the Daily Mail with a proposed new street naming and numbering policy which, if agreed tomorrow, could see the end of "names which encourage defacing name plates", such as Cockshut Road, Cracknuts Lane and Juggs Road.

Also for the chop are 'names capable of deliberate misinterpretation like Hoare Road, Typple Avenue, Quare Street, Corfe Close (4 Corfe Close) etc', as the council helpfully explains.

The powers that be also suggest "aesthetically unsuitable" street names should be "avoided", meaning the good burghers of Lewes will not have the pleasure of residing in Coalpit Lane or Gaswork Road.

Former councillor Rachel Powell, who lives on Cockshut Road, said: "I would hate for the name to change. It has some history. I can see with political correctness why the council would not want these sort of names but it is a pity." ®
