Sharon Stone schlock-fest scoops four Razzies

Basically, it Stinks, Too

Sharon Stone's who-dunnit Basic Instinct 2 won the worst picture gong at this year's Golden Raspberry ceremony, Hollywood's annual celebration of what's worst in film.

The film known to Golden Raspberry Award Foundation voters as Basically, it Stinks, Too took earned four "awards", among them Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Prequel or Sequel, and Stone herself as 2006's Worst Actress.

Fellow Worst Picture nominees Lady in the Water and Little Man each picked up multiple dis-honours at the 27th Annual Razzie Awards held on Saturday on the eve of the Oscars at Hollywood's Ivar Theatre.

The Wayans brothers' midget-thief-pretending-to-be-a-baby "comedy" Little Man, memorably described by UK film critic Marc Kermode as "genuinely evil", picked up three tacky statuettes from seven nominations. Little Man was named Worst Remake or Rip-Off (for its plot similarity to a 1954 Bugs Bunny Cartoon), while Shawn and Marlon Wayans were both dually dissed as the year's Worst Screen Couple, and jointly named Worst Actor.

Self-important auteur M Night Shyamalan earned a worst director gong for his thrill-free thriller Lady in the Water. M Night's hubris for casting himself in a pivotal role in his own film also earned him an award as Worst Supporting Actor. Worst Supporting Actress saw Carmen Electra beat out last year's Worst Actress "winner" Jenny McCarthy, for her role in "putrid parodies" Date Movie and Scary Movie 4.

Rounding out the awards, and "winner" of the newest Razzie category, Worst Excuse for Family Entertainment, was Robin Williams' road movie, RV. The critically slammed remake of The Wicker Man, staring a miscast Nicholas Cage in a bear suit, escaped further dishonour after receiving nomination in multiple Razzie categories.

Each of the Razzie winners were entitled to claim a gold-spray-painted, golf-ball-sized raspberry atop a mangled super 8 film reel, with an estimated street value of $4.97. This year's Razzie ceremony was dedicated to Sylvester Stallone, winner of 10 Golden Raspberry awards, who surprised nearly everyone this year with Rocky Balboa, a well-worked finale to the long six-installment Rocky franchise.

The night after the Razzies, Martin Scorsese finally received a long overdue best directors' Oscar for mob drama The Departed. The remake of the (more complex and emotionally involving) Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs was also named best film of the year by Academy Awards votes.

Dame Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker collected best actress and actor awards, respectively, for their roles as the Queen and Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Queen and The Last King of Scotland.

Mexican fairytale Pan's Labyrinth, which picked up three statuettes, was the night's other big winner. ®
