BT confirms engineer visits to install broadband

BT has confirmed that customers will be able to book an engineer to visit their homes and businesses to install their BT Broadband connection.

As reported by The Register last month, the engineer visit service is currently being trialled and is due to be launched later this summer.

As part of the Home IT Visit service, punters can sit back and watch an engineer connect their laptop or PC, install security software and set up their BT wireless router before providing a quick demo of how to connect to the internet and use BT's VoIP service. The engineer can also help set up a wireless network, attach printers or other gadgets.

BT declined to say how much the Home IT Visit service would cost, although El Reg reckons it could be somewhere around £40-£50 a throw.

BT also confirmed that it has unveiled a new IT advice and support service for residential and home users. The BT Home IT Advisor service provides back-up for PCs, networks and other applications. Punters can subscribe to the service for £9.99 a month or pay £25 for an individual call-out.

BT spokeswoman Emma Sanderson said: "People are increasingly using broadband in the home to help run their lives - with everything from online banking to keeping their homes secure. Therefore, the need to keep everything running smoothly and trouble free is greater than ever before." ®
