Tesco.com posts 'record year'

Cellco business passes milestone

Tesco.com has posted another bumper year as increasing numbers of shoppers opt to buy their groceries online rather than traipse round a supermarket pushing a wobbly trolley.

Publishing a trading update today, the retail giant didn't provide much detail concerning its recent performance, except to say that Tesco.com had experienced "another record year" - delivering more than a million orders in the four weeks before Christmas.

Overall, UK sales at Tesco grew by 10 per cent over Christmas and the New Year, with sales of electronics and home entertainment performing well alongside traditional items such as seasonal foods.

The retailer also reported that its mobile-phone service, Tesco Mobile - a joint venture between the grocer and cellco O2 - had signed up its one millionth Tesco Mobile punter during December.

Elsewhere, weekend reports claim that rival Sainsbury's is looking to step up its investment in e-tailing.

According to The Mail on Sunday, the supermarket plans to relaunch its online grocery service under a new name - Sainsbury's Online - and increase the coverage of the service to more than 80 per cent of the UK. ®
