Argos pulls 49p TV deal

No free lunch either

Thousands of disgruntled Argos customers are to receive refunds of 49 pence each after the retailer said “No, we’re not going to sell you a TV and DVD for less than ten bob”.

<p A “genuine internal error” meant the UK retail giant advertised the TV/DVD bundle at just 49p on its website, instead of the usual £350.

The price was live over the UK’s recent bank holiday weekend, and apparently the 10,000 Brits who weren’t revelling at the Notting Hill Carnival or getting lashed at the Carling music festival, said yes to the deal of a lifetime.

The "offer" was posted on the forum of Martin Lewis's moneysavingexpert.com. And spread like wildfire to other websites and forums.

The BBC reports one student alone bought 80 sets – perhaps he was doing an Open University degree.

A consumer expert rounded up by the Beeb said that all the transactions would be void, as “if the deal is too good to be true, it is”.

All is not lost though, as El Reg has scoured Google to see what the unhappy ArgosNaughts can do with their refunds.

Top three options: a one minute call to the UK’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency; a RyanAir flight to Derry from London (last May admittedly); or a copy of British Homing World – Britain’s Premier Pigeon Periodical. ®
