Apple releases Mac OS X 10.3.8 update

Panther patching time again

Apple has updated Mac OS X 'Panther' to version 10.3.8, today posting separate updaters for version 10.3.7 of the operating system and for all previous Panther releases.

According to Apple, the update provides a number of bug fixes and tweaks, primarily to improve the performance of a variety of third-party applications.

Headline improvements include fresh OpenGL drivers for ATI and Nvidia graphics chips, and better file-sharing and directory services for networks comprising both Macs and Windows PCs.

An incomplete list of the tweaks incorporated into the 10.3.8 update can be found here. The update also rolls in all of Apple's most recent security upgrades, and on that basis should be applied by anyone using Panther who has yet to apply them individually.

The 27.7MB 10.3.7-to-10.3.8 updater is available here. A larger, 103MB download will implement all the fixes Apple has applied since launching Mac OS X 10.3 in late 2003.

Both versions are also available via the OS' Software Update Preferences panel, with the version served depending on the whichever version of Panther you're running.

Separate versions of the 10.3.8 update Mac OS X Server are also available. ®
