Tesco touts broadband for the masses

Pile it high, sell it cheap

Supermarket giant Tesco has unveiled a new broadband package which it claims is the "cheapest full 512k speed, unlimited service on offer in the UK from any major service provider".

Tesco broadband launches online and in 700 stores today and costs £19.97 a month. For an extra 50p a month, Tesco is also throwing in a security package including anti-virus, anti-spam, firewall and parental controls.

Tesco used a panel of kids and parents from Ripple Infant and Junior School in Barking, Essex to trial the new service, which is, it says, "most family friendly and simple to use in the industry".

The company reckons it will "attract thousands of customers over the next few weeks".

Tesco Telecom chief executive Andy Dewhurst said: "We're confident that we can attract so many new customers because we genuinely think our offer is unique. Never underestimate the value of keeping things simple. There is a lot of confusion out there. Just because the term broadband has entered our every day vocabulary doesn't mean to say everyone understands what it is.

"Our customer research has shown that many people are confused – they know broadband makes things faster and they probably should get it but that is about it. That is why we know our service is going to be a real hit with families."

A week ago Tesco Mobile - a 50:50 joint venture between the supermarket and mobile operator O2 - cut the price of cross network calls and increased the number of handsets on offer in readiness for the busy Christmas period. ®
