HP confirms iPaq hx2000 series

Unannounced PDAs listed on HP web site

HP's own support web site has confirmed the upcoming availability of the hx2000 family of iPaq PocketPCs.

The site list three such models: the 2100, 2400 and 2700.

iPaq 'Morpheus' hx2000 seriesThe three devices are believed to be version of 'Morpheus', HP's upcoming iPaq that focuses on mobile data security. News of two Morpheus models surfaced earlier this year. The low-end version was said to include 64MB of SDRAM, a 312MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor, a 3.5in 320 x 240 LCD, SD IO and CompactFlash expansion support, a 970mAh battery and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

The top-end model was said to offer 128MB of RAM, 64MB of Flash, a 624MHz PXA270, Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, and a 1440mAh battery. Both models are set to ship with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition.

Crucially, both PDAs are set to feature a fingerprint scanner, and the Wi-Fi model will include full VPN support, along with CCX, 802.1x and WPA/TKIP security protocols. The devices are geared toward secure enterprise WLAN connectivity rather than Internet access through public hotspots.

The HP support reference, spotted by web site iPaqAbilities, provides no details for the products, but does at least confirm the devices' names, which the company has yet to announce officially. ®
