Samsung chases Intel with 80% sales growth

Top Ten chip makers revealed

Intel remains at the top of the chip making totem pole, but it's taking a smaller share of new business than some of its very much smaller rivals, the latest ranking from market watcher IC Insights reveals.

The figures, for H1 2004, show the likes of Samsung, Texas Instruments, TSMC and Infineon making big year-on-year revenue gains, while Renesas and Freescale - Motorola's soon-to-be-independent chip division - showed impressive sequential growth.

Comparing H1 2003 with H1 2004, Intel, Samsung, TI and Renesas retained their rankings. However, Infineon was able to move up from seventh place to fifth, knocking Toshiba and STMicro both down one place. NEC fell from eigth place to ninth, pushed down by TSMC, which rose from tenth place this time last year. Freescale, which in July 2003 was reported to have fallen out of the top ten, displaced by Philips, is now back in, at number ten.

Samsung experienced a staggering 80 per cent year-on-year sales growth, but sequentially its performance was a less impressive 10.5 per cent. TI saw sales jump 41 per cent year-on-year and 20.2 per cent sequentially - one of only three companies to experience sequential growth of over 20 per cent.

The others were Renesas (26 per cent) and Freescale (20.9 per cent), though neither yielded headline growth year on year. Instead, TSMC (43 per cent year on year) and Infineon (35 per cent) attracted IC Insights' attention this time round. The two grew 11.3 per cent and 19.7 per cent, respectively, half on half.

According to the researcher, the top ten companies' overall sales grew 33 per cent year on year, compared to industry-wide growth of 35 per cent between H1 2004 and H1 2003. ®
