Star Trek flat: yours for $1m

Set phasers to stunned

One ambitious Star Trek aficionado is offering his one-bedroom flat in Hinckley, Leicestershire for a cool $1m.

Star Trek flat: yours for £1mThis, however, is a pad with a difference - it's a complete Trekkie environment offering "LCARS, Ops units, voice activated lighting, back-lit panelling, various lighting effects, Transporter Pads and a full scale Transporter Control Console with built in sound effects".

Which is just about the minimum spec you'd expect for what is "Approximately £538,647.99" (a nice touch by the eBay currency convertor there). As one Reg wag put it: "That'd be in 23rd-century money then?" We reckon so:

The Star Trek apartment is the first and only one in the world.

Watching Star Trek, buying the merchandise, going to the conventions and talking Trek is what millions of Star Trek fans do all around the world.

Whilst all of that is exciting, I have chosen another, and more extreme option - live the experience 24/7.

As an interior designer, and science fiction fan, I have always wanted to break with traditional interior design and try something a little more exciting and challenging.

As a fully convicted science fiction fan, living in a spaceship environment is about as exciting as it gets.

Well, it is as exciting as it gets if you live in Hinckley. It's hardly the Klingon homeworld, is it?

And there's the problem. Were this extraordinary gaff in New York or London, the seller might be in with a shout. But Hinckley? Nah. Accordingly, we decided to travel back in time to 1883 and offer him 10 guineas for the place. Then someone pointed out that we had the wrong sci-fi reference: that would only work with a Back to the Future residence.

OK, we said, we'll simply knock on the front door, pull a phaser on the guy and take it at gunpoint. No chance, our resident Vulcan derided: he would have seen you coming on his long-range scanners and would simply transport you to the nearest police cell.

Right-o, we conceded, we'll infest the place with tribbles thereby lowering the price to a manageable level. Result.

In the meantime, wannabe Captain Kirks with a 23rd-century budget and an overwhelming desire to live in the strange and alien environment they call Hinckley can find the auction here. If you'd like a better look before flying the shuttle up to Leicestershire, the flat will apparently be shown on Channel 5's 20 Ways on Sunday 25 July at 8pm. ®
