Telecoms top of the patent pops

And companies get all touchy about their trademarks

In the last year, 865 patents were granted in the telecoms sector, making it officially the most innovative business in the country. Chip design also played its part, as 429 patents were granted in the last 365 days for circuitry design.

Overall, applications for patents in the UK rose six per cent to top 30,000 according to the Patent Office's annual report.

Trademarks are also a big part of the office's business. The need to protect a trademark fuelled an 11 per cent growth in the number of filings in this area. In total the number of applications was around 84,000.

El Reg wonders how much this was fueled by the whole domain name debate. ®
