Compaq ditches ProSignia range
Revamps DeskPro and Armada lines
Compaq has binned its ProSignia range of PCs after selling them for less than two years. The Big Q's SME range will reappear under the Armada and DeskPro brands.
The PC giant has introduced the Deskpro EX line, and has also added "S" edition models to its Armada notebooks and Deskpro range of business PCs - the Deskpro EXS, Armada E500S and Armada 100S. The existing ProSignia range will be transferred into the Deskpro and Armada "S" products.
The Deskpro EX models will start at $699, available in either a desktop or minitower chassis. They will use Celeron and PIII chips - ranging from 566 MHz to 1 GHz - with up to 512MB memory.
The EX models will be sold both direct and indirect, with the EXS models only sold direct. Certain models are available from today, with all products estimated to be available worldwide by October.
The Armada 100S has a mobile 533MHz AMD K6-2 chip, 5 GB hard drive, and up to a 13.3-inch TFT screen, Prices in the US start at $1,099. The Armada E500S -
from $2,099 - uses PIIIs up to 650 MHz and comes with 14.1 inch TFT.
Compaq introduced ProSignia in November 1998, a move which marked its shift to a more direct sales model. ®
